As we approached the door that led to our room, Jared’s fingers danced along the curve of my waist and I squealed, shrugging away from him. His eyes danced with laughter as he pulled the key from his pocket and unlocked the door.

Just as he reached for my hand, though, Darren’s door opened. He met my eyes for just a moment, and I felt him trying to get inside my head. I pushed back—and if I wasn’t mistaken, he actually flinched. Jared sighed, leaning against the frame of the door, his arms crossed over his chest. “Yes, Darren? Is there something we can do for you?”

My emotions rushed back to me, hitting me hard in the chest. The anger, the betrayal, the hurt. I looked away as Darren approached.

“I wanted to check in.”

“We’re fine.” Jared’s tone was sharp. “Better than fine, aren’t we, love?”

When Darren flinched again, I knew Jared was pushing images from the night we’d had into his mind. The sad look from Darren only confirmed it.

“I only wanted to tell you I’ve made arrangements to return to L.A. We’ll need to leave in a few hours.”

“All the more reason for you to move along, then, and let us get back to our fun.” Jared reached out and took my hand, pulling me toward him. I caught a glimpse of blood on Jared’s collar the same moment Darren did.

“Is that blood?” He asked, though we all knew he didn’t have to ask. As a vampire, even the smallest drop of blood wouldn’t escape his senses. “Did he—?” Darren turned to me, his hands on my neck.

Before I had the chance to do anything myself, Jared growled, pushing Darren away. “Don’t touch her.”

“Lucinda, whose blood is that?” There was a panic in Darren’s eyes, and I got a quick glimpse inside his head—he was worried that Jared had taken advantage of me. That he’d used me to achieve his own goals.

“He didn’t take my blood, Darren.” I told him, shaking my head. “It isn’t mine.”

He took my hand into his, and I knew he saw the smear of blood there. “Then did you—?” He couldn’t even bring himself to say it.

“So what if she did, Darren?” Jared asked, and Darren dropped my hand. I couldn’t read the look in his eyes as he stepped away from me.

“I didn’t,” I told him, casting a look at Jared. “And, just so we’re all on the same page here—I don’t plan to. I don’t know what that means—I don’t know if I’ll starve and die. But I don’t want true immortality. I’ve already had one choice made for me—so this is one that I’m making all on my own. Do we all understand?”

“Luce—”

“Love—”

“I’m not saying that I’m not grateful. I’m just saying—I haven’t ever had much say over my own life, as it turns out. So this one is mine.” I sighed, looking between the two vampires I could no longer deny my affections for. Even Darren, as much as he had hurt me.
